GEAR
Weight

There is a real correlation between weight and success on the PCT, and the sweet spot is:

Base weight = 10 pounds 8 ounces (4.7 kg)
Fully loaded = 30 pounds with water/food (13.6 kg)

We've spent the last 12 months hiking the national trails of the UK to make sure our gear is right for us. Our gear list won't be right for you, the most important things is you do you, and get out there and test it. Factor in the cost early, superlightweight gear doesn't come cheap.

Top Tip: You do you, what works for us might not work for you, the important thing is that you test your gear.

We want to film our experience so some additional weight is unavoidable. Though we'll post ahead the Drone, the spikes and the ice axe to mitigate where we can.

Checkout Mac's PCT surveys for average gear taken on a PCT through hike. It includes success vs weight data and all kinds of useful information. He does a god job of explaining any slants in the data too.

Post-Trail Gear List

We agonised over our gear, watched all the reviews, and tested it at home. A big lesson for us was that top of the line gear
isnt a guarantee of longevity

Additions |

-
Bug Net - picked up at Kennedy Meadows

Breakages |

-
Pillow - lasted around 1000 miles before slowly deflating overnight. Replaced with Sea to Summit Aeros £40 which also began to deflate after around 1000 miles.
-
Socks - Darn Toughs - Each pair lasted around 1000 miles. Replaced for free.
-
Poles - Leki Carbon TA XTG, clips snapped around 2000 miles, but still usable.
-
Shoes - Altra Lone Peaks - Replaced 5's with 6's and eventually 7's. Replaced (due to holes) around 600 mile intervals.
-
Tent - Zpacks Triplex - Can't recommend See our Gear Review
-
Filter - Sawyer Squeeze - Replaced twice, one cracked lid and second with really slow flow. Replaced for free.
-
Sleep Mat - Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite began to deflate over night after around 900 miles though could never find a leak. Replaced with Nemo Tensor Alpine Ultralight (£225) which also began to deflate over night almost immediately.
-
Sun Umbrella - Turned inside out and snapped with the first gust of wind
Ditched |

-
Sliders - After loosing a second pair i decided to go without and didn't miss having camp shoes.
-
Logitech Keys to Go - Didn't make it out of San Diego, not sure what i was thinking.
-
Razor - embraced the beard.
-
Micro Spikes - Much needed but ditched at Kennedy Meadows North

Regrets |

-
Ice Axe - There were several moments in the Sierra where we wished we had taken one. Peace of mind rather than absolute necessity.

Top Kit

Over 2650 miles we had time to consider which of our kit items performed the best. Here's our top three.

3L was perfect, it flexibly expanded my capacity to 5L for the driest sections.
You'll need a scoop to fill it in the shallowest water.
Even with grit in the moving parts, and snags when attached to pack the CNOC never failed. I will keep it until it does. Then buy another.
Atom Packs now have a handy design tool so you can personalise your pack to your hearts content. We loved how light weight yet robust these packs are. After a resupply things are a little tight with the 50L option.
We loved the pocket on the underside, perfect for snacks and rubbish within easy reach.
Tiny and super lightweight, yet never felt uncomfortable. Super bright and lasts a cool 3 hours on standard light.
Comes with a 3 year (or 300 charge) guarantee.
