Research
We did the research, watched the videos, read the books, had a spreadsheet. We already had most of our gear too. That didn't stop us blowing our PCT budget by whopping 100%. Here's how.

We budgeted £3000 ($3689)(after gear) for 155 days (5 months) on the PCT each. Our research told us that this was towards the lower end but permitted us some accommodation along the trail and a 2 week contingency.

Gear Costs
You don't have to spend a fortune, we met plenty of successful hikers where more was less, homemade, or bargain basement. Do factor in your gear costs, super lightweight gear is expensive and while UK availability is increasing the options are limited compared to those in the US. If you're importing then consider that you will pay an additional 32% when it enters the country from America.

Our pre trail gear list can be found here. If bought new, all at once, our total spend on gear would have been £2900 ($3566) (excluding filming gear) each but including the tent which we shared. Couples can save money on anything shared of course. Like us you will have accumulated your hiking gear over time.

Unforeseen Costs

We didn't allow for changes in exchange rates, and the pound plummeted against the dollar while on our trek.

We expected to replace some gear but not to the extent that our gear failed. See our PCT gear page for what did, what didn't, and our favourites.

Groceries in America are expensive and in some cases you can add 50% when resupplying anywhere remote.

We only posted resupply boxes 3 times, and we did it from trail. The cost is around $27 per box so factor it in.

Average Costs
-
Average resupply cost: $150 (5 days food for 2 people)
-
Average accommodation cost: $110 (1 night, double room)
-
Tips of 15% are the minimum expected

Total Costs
We Spent £6954 on the PCT, was it worth it? Absolutely. We could have saved more by chosing to camp on our zero days instead of heading for a hot shower and a comfy bed. Though, that would have altered the experience. We don't think we could have reduced any of the other costs significantly.

Our Miscellaneous costs include town food, laundry, tips, phone bills, and beers.
